How big should a cup decal be?
Two measurements decide it: how tall the straight part of the cup is, and how far around it is. A decal looks best when it stays inside the straight area (curves make vinyl wrinkle and lift) and, for a front decal, when it isn't wider than about a third of the way around. Any wider and the edges wrap out of view, so the design looks cut off from the front.
Typical decal sizes
| Cup | Front decal (up to) | Good starting size |
|---|---|---|
| 16 oz glass can | about 2.9 × 4.1 in | 2.5–3 in wide |
| 24 oz cold cup | about 3.2 × 4.25 in | 2.75–3 in, in the straight zone |
| 20 oz skinny tumbler | about 3 × 7 in | 3 in wide, vertical designs work well |
| 30 oz tumbler | about 3.5 × 6 in | 3–3.5 in wide |
| 11 oz mug | about 3.4 × 3 in | 3 in wide |
Based on typical cup measurements. Brands vary, so measure your cup and use the calculator above.
How to measure a cup for a decal
- Straight height: measure only the part where the side is flat, from where the top starts to curve to where the bottom starts to curve.
- Circumference: wrap a strip of paper around the middle of that straight area, mark where it overlaps, and measure it.
Tips for decals that stay on
- Use permanent adhesive vinyl for cups, and clean the surface with rubbing alcohol first.
- For round cups, cut slits in the transfer tape around the decal so it can follow the curve without wrinkling.
- Let permanent vinyl cure for a couple of days before washing, and hand wash to make it last.
- For a full wrap on a tapered cold cup, you need a curved template; the tapered template generator works for that too.
Frequently asked questions
What size decal for a 16 oz glass can?
A front decal on a 16 oz glass can is usually up to about 3 inches wide and 4 inches tall. Many crafters start around 2.5–3 inches wide so the design stays on the flat front.
What size decal for a 20 oz tumbler?
On a 20 oz skinny tumbler, front decals are commonly about 3 inches wide and can be up to about 7 inches tall, so tall vertical designs work well.
How do I keep a decal from wrinkling on a curved cup?
Keep the decal inside the straight part of the cup, and cut small slits in the transfer tape around the design so it can bend with the curve.
