How the calculator lays out your decals
Vinyl comes on rolls of a fixed width, most often 12 inches for home cutting machines. Decals are placed in rows across the roll with a little space between them for weeding, and a small unused strip at each edge. The calculator counts how many fit across, how many rows you need for your order, and turns that into a length of vinyl. If rotating the decals 90° fits more per row, it does that automatically.
Example
On a 12-inch roll with 0.25-inch margins and spacing, 3 × 3 inch decals fit 3 across (3 + 0.25 + 3 + 0.25 + 3 = 9.5 inches, plus margins). For 25 decals you need 9 rows. At 3.25 inches per row that's about 29 inches of vinyl, a bit under a yard.
Common vinyl roll sizes
| Roll | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 12 in × 12 in sheets | Single projects on a 12 × 12 mat |
| 12 in × 5 ft or 12 ft | Home crafters, small orders |
| 12 in or 15 in × 50 yd | Small businesses, bulk decals |
| 24 in wide | Large-format cutters and signs |
Tips to waste less vinyl
- Cut orders in batches so the decals nest together instead of cutting one at a time.
- Keep spacing small (about 0.25 inch) but not so tight that weeding becomes hard.
- Save the leftover strips for small decals and test cuts.
- Add 5–15% extra for test cuts and mistakes, especially with new materials.

Frequently asked questions
How many decals can I get from a 12 inch by 5 foot roll?
It depends on decal size and spacing. With 3 × 3 inch decals and 0.25 inch spacing, you get 3 across and about 18 rows, so roughly 54 decals from a 5-foot roll. Enter your sizes above for an exact count.
How much vinyl do I need for 50 decals?
Enter the decal size and quantity above. For example, 50 decals of 3 × 3 inches on a 12-inch roll need 17 rows, or about 55 inches (roughly 1.5 yards) of vinyl.
Should I leave space between vinyl decals?
Yes. About 0.25 inch between decals makes weeding easier and gives you room to cut them apart.
