What goes into the price of a vinyl decal?
Most new sellers price decals by looking at what others charge, and many end up working for free. A price that lasts covers five things:
- Vinyl: the area of the decal plus a small weeding border, and some waste for test cuts and mistakes.
- Transfer tape: roughly the same area as the vinyl.
- Your time: cutting, weeding and taping each decal, plus time per order for setup and packing.
- Packaging: backing cards, sleeves, stickers and envelopes.
- Fees: marketplaces and payment processors usually take a percentage of the sale plus a small fixed amount.
On top of that sits your profit, the money left after everything is paid, including you.
How the calculator works
Material cost is the decal's area (plus a 0.25 inch border on each side for weeding) times the cost per square inch of your vinyl and transfer tape, increased by your waste percentage. Labor is your minutes times your hourly rate. The suggested price is set so that after selling fees are taken out, the profit you chose is left over:
Price = (materials + labor + packaging + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − fee % − profit %)
Tips for pricing decals
- Pay yourself an hourly rate. Even if crafting is a hobby, your time is a cost. It's also what lets you hire help later.
- Small decals are mostly labor. A 2-inch decal uses pennies of vinyl but takes nearly as long to weed as a 4-inch one, which is why small decals are often sold in sets.
- Charge more for detailed designs. Thin script and lots of small pieces take much longer to weed; raise the minutes per decal.
- Check your fees regularly. Marketplace and payment fees change. Update the fee fields to match your shop.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I charge for a vinyl decal?
Add up vinyl and transfer tape (with some waste), your time at an hourly rate, packaging and selling fees, then add the profit you want. The calculator does this for you; many small decals end up between a few dollars and around ten dollars depending on size, detail and time.
How do I calculate the cost of vinyl per decal?
Divide your roll's price by its area in square inches to get cost per square inch, then multiply by the decal's area plus a small border for weeding. Add a waste percentage for test cuts and mistakes.
Should I include my time when pricing decals?
Yes. Weeding and taping are usually the biggest cost for small decals. Leaving your time out means the price only covers supplies.
